Learn, unlearn and relearn…

The passing of Harper Lee moved me to looking at some of the less frequently visited corners of my bookcase to hunt down my very old copy of To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s time to read it again.But as I stood there staring at the books I’d read and loved I was drawn to others that I also haven’t touched for decades. Fiction like Jude the Obscure and Catch 22 and business and self-improvement books that spoke to me at the time and I kept for future reference. Books like Mans Search for Meaning, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard………………For me it feels like a good time to dip into some of those old-faithfuls, rediscover their meaning and, with many more years under my belt, discover new things in them that I just wasn’t ready to learn the first time.And this brings me to a quotation I saw this morning from Alvin Toffler an American writer and futurist: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn”I plan to make the trip to the bookcase a bit more now and see what needs to be learned and relearned.I’ll leave the last words to Harper Lee herself:

“The book to read is not the one which thinks for you, but the one which makes you think……………”
